    Octacorda is a unique duo bridging the gap between solo and chamber ensemble performance. Joana and Stanislav founded Octacorda with the aim of discovering the variety of musical and artistic possibilities afforded by this distinct partnership of violin and viola, which is rarely seenshowcased outside of the context of a larger ensemble. The pairing of violin and viola allows for many exciting programming opportunities: alongside a versatility of repertoire, which can include exquisite rarely-performed works alongside popular classical arrangements, the duo is equally flexible when it comes to venue spaces, due to the particular portability of their instruments. Octacorda, representing a longstanding musical partnership, affords Joana and Stanislav the opportunity to communicate to audiences in an intimate and unique way.

  • Joana Valentinaviciute, Violin

    “Playing music is a very strong emotional experience. It is also a very intensive intellectual process - a special way of thinking. It connects time and place, so that new thoughts, ideas, visions and senses can emerge. They evolve and grow deeper with each rehearsal and performance on stage. My goal is to present something that would appeal to a more diverse audience and encourage deeper thought.”

    Accomplished Lithuanian-born violinist Joana Valentinaviciute made her concerto debut with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in 2010, and has performed internationally. Joana’s performances in London alone encompass venues such as St James's Piccadilly, The Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, the V&A and National Gallery.

    Joana frequently takes part in international music festivals, and has previously performed in Pablo Casals Prades and The International Holland Music Sessions. A keen chamber musician, Joana founded the dynamic Octacorda in 2007, in partnership with violist Stanislav Popov; together, they discover and perform rare works for violin and viola duo. As well as being a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Joana has played in guest principal positions in orchestras across the UK and Europe. She has had the privilege of working with leading conductors including Bernard Haitink, Charles Dutoit, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelsons and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

    Mentors for Joana during her Artist Diploma at the Royal College of Music in London, supported by a Heddy Simpson Award, and postgraduate training at Malmö Academy of Music included Alexandr Ficher and Radu Blidar. Joana has participated in masterclasses with musicians such as Midori, Norbert Brainin, Nikolaj Znaider, Hagai Shaham and Rudolf Koelman.

  • Stanislav Popov, Viola

    Violist Stanislav Popov is in great demand as a chamber and orchestral musician in the UK and beyond, having performed in countries including Denmark, Germany, France, Italy and Canada. Following his graduation from N. Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatoire in his home city of St. Petersburg, studying with Oleg Balabin, Stanislav gained early professional experience at the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra as Co-Principal Viola. Stanislav went on to hold the position of Solo Viola at Malmö Opera Theatre Orchestra in Sweden, where in 2008 he performed the Bartok Viola Concerto, conducted by Joseph Swensen. Whilst in this role, he founded Malmö Opera String Sextet, as well as introducing audiences to a broad spectrum of chamber music for viola and piano through regular recitals.

    In addition to his work as a soloist and a chamber musician he has been guest principal and co-principal with European orchestras including The Royal Opera House, The Royal Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Oxford Philomusica. Stanislav has worked with conductors such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Placido Domingo, Evgeny Svetlanov, Mariss Janssons, Yuri Bashmet, James Conlon, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta. Stanislav founded Octacorda with Joana Valentinaviciute in 2008. Their long-standing partnership affords unique and exciting artistic opportunities to share music with new audiences.
